I have been looking into some Duplex properties in CA recently and have been noticing that a large number seem to not have a permit on file with their town or city for the second property that is on the land. I prefer to use a VA loan on future purchases, how does a permit affect getting a loan overall and are there any ways around this problem?

@Andrew K. Thanks for the reply! I will for sure spend this upcoming deployment looking into the requirements and what I can and cannot do with a VA loan during my free time.

@Andrew Johnson Your are definitely right about BP being a great resource, I try to use it as much as I can. I will keep what you said in mind as I look into my area more while I am gone, the rehab cost advice will really help me and gives me more thought into how I will use the VA loan, Thanks for the information and your reply!

Hello all! I am an aspiring investor currently in the military and stationed in southern California. I have an upcoming deployment and am pushing back my plans currently, but I am looking for help on what my best options are for financing upon my return next year. For my wife and I, I want to purchase at least a duplex but a triplex would be all the better, I am looking for insight into whether I should apply for a VA loan, standard finance options or possibly for private financing in regards to turning around shortly for another property and the general market of SO CAL.
