Post: Purchasing a Triplex which only has one Oil Furnace

Hello,

I will be closing on a triplex (3 unit home) in Philadelphia in one week.  Currently the utilities are not separated.  The entire home has one fuel burning furnace in the basement.  I plan to get at minimum the electric split upon purchase.  I am trying to determine if I should pay to get the heating system separated and buy gas burning furnaces.  The apartment on the first floor actually has electric baseboard heating. 

I was wondering if I should just get electric baseboard heating for the 2nd and 3rd floor apartments.  There is already gas used for hot water heating only on the house.  I am not sure what will be most cost effective.  Could you guys please provide any advice on this subject?
