In Indianapolis there is a 1% cap on property tax on your primary residence, they call it a homestead exemption. Is there a way to obtain the homestead exemption even though its not my primary residence? If it is not, will my account be able to file it with my taxes as a deduction. Any help would be appreciated. I already called the County auditor office but did not get a clear answer.

I thought it would be wise to introduce myself so i don't become a lurker.  I recently just bought my first full time rental property which is conveniently located right next door to my house. I hate to see my neighbors leave but since that was inevitable, i might as well have taken advantage of the situation. I had been looking into rental properties for a while so that seemed like a perfect start. The original owners are renting it until there new house in finished in April. On a personal level, I am still working my full time job as a service manager and building cars on the side. I'll be looking for another property to buy in a few months hopefully.
