@Carson Sweezy Thanks for the welcome, I'm hoping to learn a lot. I'm still working on the strategy. Ideally, I'd like to buy a small multifamily that I could live in with my wife while renting out the other units. However, given the location of my and my wifes jobs (I work in Fairfax, she works in DC) and the NOVA market that may or may not be the direction we end up taking. I'd love to hear any input you might have.

My name is Jared and I'm originally from Michigan. I moved to the Northern Virginia area about a year ago for work (I'm a civil engineer). My long-term goal in real estate is to build a portfolio of multi-family/mixed use rentals to supplement and eventually replace my 9-5 income. In the short term, I'd like to close my first deal within the next six months. I originally found Bigger Pockets through the personal finance blogosphere (in various interviews Paula Pant and others recommended BP to anyone interested in real estate). Since then I've been listening to podcasts and reading articles regularly and in the past month finally decided that it's time to get involved in the community and start making things happen.
