Sounds like a good tome to jump in. My wife and I did the same thing. We started by living in the house and then we moved out and bought another house for ourselves, which is also now a rental.

I think as long as you keep making the mortgage payment and are the owner your good to go. I'm sure someone else can tell you how it went for them.

Definitely go talk to the city. I had a family member get told this and sold 5 acres with one house on it. the next owner subdivided and made a killing. Good luck!
My grandparents stayed in one for a while. It was nice and clean every time I visited. I would rent to them as long as I had tile floors in most of it. Good luck.
