Thanks for the welcome, Keith.
I'm currently considering rehabbing SFH into rentals or flips, hopefully within 6 months. The particualr area I'm in is one of the best school districts in the area so I'd like to be ready for April/May 2012 with a 3BR/2 property to get the ball rolling.
Another option is MFH (duplex or quad) in high density areas around Houston.

My current plan is to start a side business doing what I know (IT) after-hours/weekends to raise some $. I've got around $3k now and socking away about $1k/month currently.

Anyone have @.02 to throw in?

My name is Robert Norman, I do IT work from Austin (Buda) to Galveston County so I do get around the area!
I've read some of the standard books, attended a few seminars and I'm ready to quit lurking and start participating!!

My goal is pretty straightforward (if self-serving) but I would like to replace my girlfriend's income (within 60%) so she can attend law school full time instead of the current nightmare of full-time job+kid+law school.

That being said, I've never done a deal. I'm willing to trade leg-work for knowledge, I'm in courthouses alot (gov't contracts), have bankers as business clients and share my office with a property management company, so real estate seemed like a good opportunity to use what's around me.

If anyone in the area can help a newbie with some questions and getting started, I'll buy beers over a football game.

Thanks for having me, and I look forward to talking with people who DO.
