Thank you.  I wanted to believe the savings account was a better option but it just seemed to good to be true. =)

Lets say you have a standard 30yr Fixed Mortgage with a rate of 3% and a balance of $100,000.

Now lets say you have an extra $100/month that you could use to pay down the principal OR you could put it in a saving account and earn 4.5% APY.

On the surface, earning 4.5% sounds like the smarter choice.  However, after giving it a little thought, you realize that after a year, 3% of 100k is $3000.  Whereas, 4.5% of 1200 is only $54.  (This is over-simplified but I hope you can see where I'm going)

I'm not sure how to do the math to see the exact figures in both cases to determine amount saved vs amount gained over time.

There's got to be a formula or a calculator somewhere but I'm not having any luck with search results using my existing (limited) terminology.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd like to weigh in on this. I am brand new to REI but I have been in the HVAC industry for the last 20 years. As @Paul S. I personally would not recommend the 5" filter, whether it's Aprilaire or any other brand.  The increase in static pressure can cause problems with the equipment if the duct work or blower cfm is not sized correctly.

It's difficult to say with any certainty with the info you have given...

I'm assuming it's a brick wall?  Are the cracks just along the mortar joints?

How bad are they?  It may just be that the building settled or there could be an issue with the foundation.

Some pictures would really help.

As a prospective home buyer, my first home has wood siding and has been a real pain.  I will never get wood siding again.  That is just my opinion, I hope it helps.

Assuming we are talking about homes, I highly recommend something that generates Ionized-Hydro-Peroxides.  If you google "REME" you will find links to a company called RGF that sells products that go in the duct work or plug in to the wall.  I have used them with very impressive results.  Hope that helps...
