Hey Christina! Christine Bellish is correct. With a Solo401k it functions almost identically to a typical 401k, so you are subject to the same tax implications and early withdrawal penalty when taking money out before the age of 59 1/2. However like Christine also mentioned, with a typical 401k it is possible to take a loan out, the same is true for a Solo401k. As for the rates and timeline that it has to be paid back, the TYPICAL timeline is that you will have to put it back in within 5 years and the 401k plan will typically have it written how many personal loans you can have taken out at one time.

You can always become an LP in someone else's syndication as well and simply write a check 


Alexander is right, Syndications can be a great way to passively invest without tying up too much time. They can also be a great way to build your retirement funds by investing in them using a Self-Directed IRA.

Once you are in the group, start watching for who the key players are (you'll be able to tell by their contributions to the posts and discussions).
