definitely start with a house hack.  if it's difficult - good.  fewer people will do it.

i'd look for meetups or even start your own.  you don't need a mentor, you just need to build a network.

good luck

I needed to hear this! Thank you Nicholas.

Hey Michelle, welcome to BP!

Totally hear you on the analysis paralysis — most of us have been there in the beginning. House hacking in NYC can be tricky because of prices and regulations, so a lot of local investors end up looking out of state for better cash flow. You might start by learning one or two markets really well instead of researching everything at once — it helps cut through the overwhelm.

As for community, BP does have local meetups (check the Events section), and NYC has a pretty active REI scene if you search on Meetup or Facebook groups. A mentor can be great, but so can partnering with other beginners so you grow together.

Start small, focus on learning by doing, and you’ll be surprised how quickly the fog clears.

Thank you for your advice Arman! Is there a particular action you took to make things click faster when you started out?

Quote from @Basit Siddiqi:

I was in your same shoes about 9 years ago.

I was living in NYC and trying to decide how and where to invest.

Prices in New York were expensive 10 years ago and have gotten more expensive.

I started investing in a market that was 1-2 hours away. I moved out of NYC and I invest in a long-distance market where I haven't been in the city for over 2 years.

The strenghts of living in NYC are the high salaries(hopefully) and the network of other wealthy people.

I took my salary and invested my money where it goes further.

You may want to start off by going to a real estate networking event. There is normally one a week that is posted on meetup or facebook.

Best of luck!

Appreciate your response and letting me in on the approach you took! I'm definitely going to look into some events, and really consider all my options.

Hi BP community!

I'm brand new to RE investing, still figuring out what I want my first investment to be, and have a lot of analysis paralysis. Initially wanted to house hack because that feels safest/easiest but it feels like it will be really difficult in NYC. Also considering out of state options. Also just trying to take in all the information on BP and advice people are giving. Its a lot!

Anywho, I'm wondering if theres a BP NYC community? I feel like a community will make things feel less scary. I would love a mentor and can exchange my time, or maybe my services? (I'm a software developer). Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I also welcome any advice on how to overcome analysis paralysis and also what a good first investment approach could be

Thank you x10
