David,

Thank you so much for the response this should absolutely help out. When you were looking for your first property did you deal with the shiny spoon? Meaning you continuously bounced behind a strategy or property type? I'm having a hard time dealing with that aspect. Once day ill spend a ton of time looking at single family fixer uppers and another day ill spend time looking at multifamily.

Nick

Hello BiggerPockets Community,

I recently got home from a deployment and am looking to invest in a property either single family and multifamily in the Milwaukee, WI area and have already gone through the pre-approval process for a VA loan. I'm running into a decision road block for either a multi family to house hack and update one unit at a time or a single family that needs upgrades.

I am looking for some advice on if a VA loan is the right avenue to purchase or if there is a different alternative via FHA, conventional, 203k, etc. I have a pretty decent sum of money saved and ready to invest I'm just more or less on where to start.

Let me know what you think the best option would be. Thanks for your time

Nick

Hello BiggerPockets community! I am currently serving overseas and for the last few months have been reading, researching, and listening to everything real estate related trying to learn everything I can. I still have some time left but I will be looking at purchasing a property when I get home.

I've been talking to a few people that have already been in real estate for a little while to see where they started so I can try and determine what strategy makes the most sense for me starting out.

The dilemma I am running into is deciding where I want to start. I am unsure if I want to look at multi-family properties to house hack with cash-flow potential or if I want to look at single family properties that need work and would make a good BRRRR candidates.

I am looking for input related to how you decided on your first property and got started in real estate. Looking forward to the feedback.  Thank you for your time.

Nick
