Quote from @Jared Hottle:

Nick Welcome. I was in the same boat lost my job end of 2019 and got really excited about real estate investing during Covid. Had enough saved up and made the plunge. I believe it is one of the best jobs to have for a stay at home parent because of the flexibility and you can do as much or as little in the business as you want. Saying that you have started other businesses and failed makes me wonder if you get shiny object syndrome and quit before seeing it through to the end. In that case I understand why it may not be good to leverage your house into investing. Once you do that it has to work no plan B. I think that is just fine but make sure you don't leave the project have done. Maybe suggest helping other short term landlords in the area with management or unit turnover as a risk free way to see if you like the business for a few months.

My wife laughed at the shiny object syndrome line, I appreciate the honesty. It definitely lends true but after reflecting, I can learn a lot from those failures. I have reached out to a friend who is willing to mentor me in STR's and real estate in general and will be a sponge for the next year or so. Thanks for the response!

Hello all

My name is Nick Taylor and I've just recently become interested/obsessed in real-estate. I just finished the book by Avery Carl "STR for Long-term wealth" and loved it, now all I do is listen to the bigger pockets pod cast and talk with my wife about possible options with real estate. Long story short, I lost my job back in 2020 and was lucky enough our savings allowed me stay home with our kiddos during that tough time. Now that things are getting back to normal I really want to starting working for myself and generate some income while being a "stahd" aka stay at home dad. I've gone through a ridiculous amount of ways to generate some income all online but none of them have worked out. Real estate I believe is a great opportunity for us to get the life we want. The problem, we used ALL our money and our credit is not the best. We're house rich though and have a good amount of equity, is using that to get started a terrible idea? My wife seems to think so but I feel like we're missing out on a opportunity to change our life. Anywhoo, cheers from Oregon.
