Post: Help with setting up a private money loan?

Hi,

I have an opportunity to do a private loan deal through a family member with a great track record in real estate development. Looking over the documents, it's clear to me that I could benefit from a lawyer to help review the terms. I also need someone to act as the trustee (also a lawyer?) and I'm not sure how to go about finding that person or how to compensate them. Any advice?

Great idea @Scott Davis. Thanks for the tip! I'd love referrals for contractors if anyone has a recommendation.

@Fionna Chau, I am still trying to get a feel for the market. I’ve been looking at houses I might want to live in as we’re thinking Albuquerque might be our long-term plan, but those properties don’t seem to make sense from a cash flow perspective if we were to rent it out now. I am going to do some more research, but when I’m ready I’d love to get your agent’s information. Thanks!

@Greg Becker Actually I am looking to buy property to rehab and rent/BRRRR. I was looking on Craigslist and saw a lot of wholesalers, which I hadn't really seen in other markets, so I was curious about it. I'd love to connect and hear about your projects and perspective.

Hi, I know this thread is older, but I have this same question. I have a permitted structure that was converted to an ADU and I tried to get it permitted as such last year. I had a non-responsive architect that took over six months to get plans and was not helpful in dealing with the city (Burbank). The online permitting process is confusing and difficult to reach a live person for questions. I gave up on it, so it's sitting there half complete. Now I'm wondering if I should expand the ADU or reconfigure it to include part of the garage, which would make the overall layout of the property much better for both units.

Any advice on this? Anyone have a good architect who is reliable and can help with the permitting?

Thanks!

@Fionna Chau, curious if you ever found a property? I was also interested in Albuquerque. I also live in LA and am a new investor.

I appreciate the insight, Terrell. I see a lot of wholesalers offering properties on craigslist in the area and wondering if that's a way to get some decent leads. Any thoughts on that?

Hi all,

I am just getting started in real estate investing and I'm very interested in Charlotte. I have some money to invest, and would love to partner with someone who knows the market well (I'm in California). I'm willing to work hard and/or cover more of the investment in exchange for a chance to learn. I have also done a lot of rehabbing, so I generally understand what's involved and how to manage contractors. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
