i don't know you or anything about you other than what i posted but i would generally advise against doing this

you'd need an investment to really knock it out of the park with a return to make it worth the penalties and taxes and that's just unlikely on your first try

with respect to STRs... do you want to own and manage an STR? do you have training that makes it likely that you will be successful? you can't just pick it solely because you think the returns would be higher. if that were the case we'd all do it.

can you house hack instead?

good luck with whatever you decide

 Thank you for your reply!!

I don't believe that we would recoup our losses on the first rental. But the money is unusable left in the account... Until retirement. My thinking is that using the money now to get started investing would be more beneficial over the returns of the 403b over the long run. Is it unreasonable to hope that over our investing career we could make up for it and then some? That RE investing could beat the 403b? My goal is to build a portfolio to generate some extra income and build for retirement. I have personal relationships who own and operate STR as well a my own self-education through books and podcasts... As a starting point. Our market also lends well to STR: Corning NY has a lot of vacation and tourists sites, is 4.5 hrs from NYC, and has rustic property for people looking to escape the city.

I have a 403b from working with a hospital. The investments have done well and had matching deposits from my employer while I worked there. I since got a different job and am wondering about my options to use this money as a down payment to start our RE investing. I believe changing employment allows me to cash out (which would incur penalties and taxes) or to transfer to another account. Is that correct? I have about 50k in the account now. I'm willing to take the hit in order to get started with RE. Is there a better option using this account to get started with a local STR investment? Thank you!
