Columbia is a great place to invest, and CoMoREI is a great place to connect with other investors! We had a great meeting last night, discussing the process of finding, and closing, a deal.
I highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with some local ordinances as well. Such as compliance certification ordinance and occupancy codes that are unique to our area, and could cause you some problems if you don't follow them.
Also, we do have a few banks who do keep their residential lending local, and do not sell it off to larger mortgage companies. While I agree there are many advantages to the commercial lending, don't write off the all the residential loans as an appropriate tool for some situations.
Reach out to myself or any of the people Trent tagged above, any of us would be happy to sit down with a young investor and share our thoughts, and encouragement.

CoMo REI is a real estate investors group. We network and educate. Our regular monthly meetings on the 1st Wed evening each month. Our December meeting will feature Tadd Legar of Best Buy who will be sharing with us about ways to integrate technology into our properties, such as Nest style thermostats and keyless entry systems.

Doors open at 6 PM, admission is included in membership fees, $10 for non-members. (fees are per company, not per person)
Optional Dinner Buffet will open about 6:15 PM, $20 per plate.

CoMo REI is a group of real estate investors in the Mid-Missouri area who meet monthly for networking, education and dinner.
We meet the first Wednesday evening of every month, topics vary but we always include time to network and share deals.
Meeting attendance is included in membership fee or $10 for non-members. Includes as many members of your company as you want to come for one entrance fee.
Optional dinner buffet is available for $20/ plate. Please let us know of any food allergies or special needs ahead of time so we can have the chef prepare accordingly.
