I know that I'm a hands-on learner, so in order to feel 100% comfortable I need to just jump in & start, and just like anything else, it takes practice & consistency to learn, but I guess since REI is something that isn't as readily accepted or taught, the fear of it all just seems to be overwhelming sometimes.
