You are correct Chicago does have some STR rules and regulations you should be aware of.I don't own any STRs but I think the book Short Term Rental Long Term Wealth covers the topic well.

I love this topic because I too have an older relative with about the same value sitting in their home, and we have a discussion once every other week about my suggestion to them of using a HELOC to pull money and buy a few cash flowing assets (since they are ready for retirement, their main goal is immediate cash flow).For what it’s worth, both my multi-unit rentals in Pittsburgh do cash flow!

Love the topic (However, I don't think throwing any specific company under the bus was needed to make the point.)Being knee deep in the market here in Detroit for the past 30 years as a rehabber and property manager, I can say for sure that as a cash flow strategy the turnkey model can work great pretty much "anywhere" in the Metro Area.
