For me personally, finances aside, I would have a different opinion of purchasing my grandparent's lifetime home than I would one of the shacks we lived in for a year or two when I was a kid. 

So the elderly grand parent finds out the kids have little time for them now.Money is great, business success and all of that but you have to be present in the moment and enjoy today.

We are living in the GREATEST housing 4 profit enviroment EVER in our life times, our parents, grandparents EVER! 

My grandparents who spent everything EVERYTHING for us, working fingers to the bone on the farm, coming here with near to nothing but clothes on there backs, had 0 to retire upon.

He has had life cycle of passive investors from the grandparents, to the parents, to the children, etc. invest in his properties.Some investors with track records already do not need to sell. 

I am sad that my grandparents got ahead by working hard and saving, but I got ahead by borrowing.  

Used to go there with my grandparents like a weekend a month from age 3 on, The last time I was there was 2001 right before 9/11 and they died in 2003.

Now that I have kids, I don't think I'd live in Guatemala because of safety concerns, lack of infrastructure (I know Mexico isn't so great either but it's much better than Guatemala), and general political instability.I lived 3.5 years in Latvia (that's where my wife and my grandparents are from) and I love it there, especially in summer (or only in summer?).

Grand parents like to spend time with the grand kids.
