The only benefit that they could come up with was that I could access my accounting program from multiple devices and not just from my office. 

HELLO - - these are the kinds of devices (ioT) that allowed the internet outage just recently. 

Download app to both devices, activate an account on the one to be used as camera, sign in on the monitoring device & you're done.There is also an app for the android but with so many of the kids iPhones floating around I haven't bothered to review it.
