There are a ton of little things that we (my roofer brother and I) can do in a week or two.

He is also a roofer for his day job day and is capable of that trade.

@Bruce Woodruff has a great point a GC is a GC not a roofer that can also be a GC on the side.

I've gone about finding roofers by calling local roofing supply stores and getting some referrals of their best customers.

The roofer came back out and fixed it the leak, but did a mediocre repair job on my ceilings.

Find the labor: someone you know (or they know) is a licensed and insured tradesperson (plumber/electrician/roofer, etc).  

I called a roofer and he came out promptly and had the leaks stopped within a few hours.
