Commissions have always been negotialbe and they still are. 

Saving 1% (about $5,500) in commission is likely to cost a ton more than that if you hire a cheap agent who underperforms and botches the sale.

Although, I am kind of hoping that I earn enough in commissions between now and spring to pay down my primary home to waste less money in interest and be able to save my rental.
