Hint: the ones that run ads on TV and have fancy wrapped trucks and show up with logo'ed shirts are WAY more expensive than the ones that have been doing it for 20 years, but show up in a questionable looking pickup truck!  

As someone who has been burned in the past by bad GCs, here is a crucial step I take in the vetting process before I hire them (in addition to all of the great points shared above):Take a look at the interior of their work truck.
