Stairways being a major focal element in many a home, the hacks dont last long.

I will have to seal up the door, and framing out and install a stairway leading to the outside, and cut out a door.

One has low headroom in the stairway going upstairs to two bedrooms, with the master bedroom on the first floor. 

Has anyone dealt with this before where there is a shared stairway and you would have to use it to get to your lower bedroom and laundry area?

I have been leaning on possibly utilizing the wood looking tile plank, but haven't yet.What are your opinions on flooring for stairways?

During a walk-through of my property today, my contractor says that my 1966-built single family with basement will need hard-wired detectors: Plain old smoke detectors in bedroom, and combo smoke/monoxide detectors near bottom landing of basement stairway and another one near the furnace. 

sometimes when I do research on a properties I see building code violation regarding abandoned building. they are standard and : CN193000Maintain building in safe condition so it does not constitute actual and imminent danger to public. (13-12-130, 13-8-100, 13-12-120, 13-12-125, 65 ILCS 5/11-31-1) Maintain building windows and doors in safe condition. (13-196-550) Maintain stairway and porch in safe condition. (13-196-570) Maintain floors, walls, and ceilings in safe condition. (13-196-540) Maintain building in safe condition.

•Personal items cannot be kept in common areas including front and back porch, parking lot, laundry room, halls and stairways.

The other things it will need is fixing a section of the fence in the backyard, putting a railing up for the stairway to the basement and shampooing the berber carpets in the two bedrooms and hall.

There is common stairway access to the unit, and considering adding an egress window to make it compliant.
