I stay in NC for all of the reasons that you mentioned in your post:  the weather is nice (though it snowed yesterday), cost of living is low, property taxes are low, employment is strong, education is strong, the beaches and mountains are both within a few hours drive (but no good snow skiing).  

I wanted to be close to nightlife, easy access to the mountains, and I liked the urban setting.

I lived in a mountain town tucked away in the Rockies for 7 years and to be honest I was pretty ignorant to the rest of the world.

Also, a small mountain town in WA I moved to, where my daughter grew up still considered some people there "outsiders" even though they'd lived there for 20+ years.I ended up figuring it out and made good friends in both places, but it was challenging. 

Very small town (less than 2,000 people) so an atmosphere of nonchalant agreements took place.
