I stay in NC for all of the reasons that you mentioned in your post:  the weather is nice (though it snowed yesterday), cost of living is low, property taxes are low, employment is strong, education is strong, the beaches and mountains are both within a few hours drive (but no good snow skiing).

Also, a small mountain town in WA I moved to, where my daughter grew up still considered some people there "outsiders" even though they'd lived there for 20+ years.I ended up figuring it out and made good friends in both places, but it was challenging.
