Ethics is a huge area of study, there are many areas as college and graduate level courses in different aspects, political sciences lean on social interactions and ethics, so we aren't going to come to any conclusion that can be an in depth accounting of expected behavior.But, if you act illegally you're generally acting unethical as well.

Tell yourself the worst thing that could happen is say they say no but even that no gets you more experience with these interactions and one step closer to your yes.  

Don't get confused with multiple options rather than go for direct interaction with target audience.
