Using an in color when your floors and cabinets don't go well with it is as bad as leaving the current colors. 

Darker colors might be good if you want to hide stains from multiple guests over the years spilling drinks.

Instead of howling at the dark, @John Clark: why don't you light a lamp for those who are lost?
