Am I doing this small business thing right?

If I simply want to manage a few properties for my dad (collect rent, do small projects, coordinate repairs), do I need to have a license for that?

Can I just establish a small business (sole proprietorship) and file along with my personal taxes and social security number?

This question seems so basic, right? But - I promise - I have called the SC Dep of Rev AND the SC Business Service and still not gotten a clear answer.

Please help!

You do not legally need a business entity like a corporation or LLC. You can run your business as a sole proprietor as you say. Whether that is a good idea or not is a question for a CPA or an attorney.

Whether you need a license will depend on you specific state and county laws. You may need a real estate license, however you do not need one to manage properties in MD. Even if you do not need a real estate license there may be some other type of business license needed.
