solo 401k, take distribution, how to pay the taxes due?

Hi Folks, We have an Advanta solo 401k, took the self administered version. IE check book control, EIN + bank account. Own a bunch of rentals, have done this for many years in an Equity Trust SD-IRA (YUCK!) now happily in our own Advanta self administered solo 401k.

BUT in the past when we've taken distributions I did not pay taxes at the time of distribution and settled up on the next April 15, but that causes large tax bills and moaning from both me and the IRS.

I'm familiar with 941 EFT system to pay payroll taxes to the Fed/IRS but I don't know how to pay these one time taxes to both state (GA) and FED?  Any tips?   I'd prefer to stay out of some electronic system since in the past they like to remember you paid, then start naging qtrly and then threatening to fine you for not paying more qtrly taxes.  I'm hoping a mailed in form/check can be done ad-hoc one off as distributions are, one-offs...  Tnx.

I think what you're looking for is form 1040-ES - Quarterly Estimated Tax Payment.

You **could** do it through EFTPS via the SDIRA as a withholding on the 1099-R, but I think 1040-ES will be simpler and less headache for you.
