Personal home renovation receipts

Guys what is the best way to have a contractor write out a receipt for home renovation and are new installations the only thing that’ll help with cost basis vs just fixing up/painting? Also does the receipt require any tax ids? This contractor uses a very generic receipt book and I’ve been paying him using checks

Thx
