Where have you found your mentor

Question

Where have you guys found your mentor? For those of you that have, was it critical to getting your rei career started? I feel like Im spinning my wheels right now.

I have had mentors throughout pretty much my entire adult life. But with that being said, of the thousands of people I've crossed paths with, I could count on one hand the ones who have become a "mentor" of mine.

Anytime you meet somebody much older than you, who has accomplished the precise things that you would like to accomplish, and who you genuinely get along with, that could be a potential mentor.

I wouldn't get too hung up on landing a mentor right here, right now. They will come and go throughout life. Instead, focus on defining your goals, getting educated, and actually doing deals.

I found my mentor within.

In all seriousness, I don't believe that a mentor is very important when first getting started. I believe that if you listen to the BP Real Estate Podcast, swim through the forums soaking up all the information it provides, and attend your local REIA meetings you can do quite well for yourself until you have a few properties under your belt. Once you get to that point and are getting some money coming in I think a mentor could be a valuable asset to scale your business. But to get started, just get started.

Former colleague of mine that we kept in touch over the years and now we work together again. He got into real estate shortly after he quit his job where we met. Not until recently did we re-connected and he has done so many deals since we last spoke. Now that we connected again I work closely with him to learn and grow with his company and in the real estate side of things. Networking is probably the best way. I've also met many people invest in those real estate course for investing but those are costly but they seem to work as they are now successful in this industry.

Hi Joe,I have found mine through my lender funny enough. She helped my sister many times and we just clicked in a way where it has helped me learn so much in a small amount of time.You don't need one to get your RE career started but it can be quite helpful.If you don't have one then I would recommend learning from other sources and attending meet ups.

At my previous job, I had a supervisor who had bought a bunch of properties during the recession of '08 and we ended up just chatting a lot. We worked in close proximity to each other and there was a good amount of downtime so we were able to spend a lot of time on the clock analyzing deals.

Oftentimes I think finding a mentor is better just in your immediate network, people you already know who happen to already have properties.

But ultimately I think a mentor is kind of overrated - I ended up having to learn a lot of the stuff on my own anyway, he just gave me a few pointers here and there.

I started about 7 years ago with Flip More Deals now called The Growth Collective. A client of mine recommended them to me, I had a few conversations the Doug (owner) and just felt he was the right fit. He was amazing got my first deal in 2 months and haven't looked back since!

I think finding a mentor can come in two parts, one is connecting with people who are involved in RE investing, and the second is finding someone who is working toward, or actually participating in a part of RE investing that you're interested in.For the former I've found it hugely beneficial to mention to everyone you talk to, friends, family, coworkers that you're starting you're investing journey! I was amazed at how many people I already had in my network who invested in some capacity that I simply didn't know did because it never came up in conversation. As others have mentioned, REIA meetings are great as well, the more you can surround yourself with communities doing the same thing the better!As for the latter part, I think it can be trickier to find someone who is doing what you want to be doing! I'm a buy and hold investor who focuses on BRRRR and not many people in my network (in the beginning) were involved in those types of deals. However, different people had advice and provided mentorship for me on different parts of that process they were familiar with such as private money, purchasing via different avenues etc. So don't be afraid to seek advice from as many people as you can even if they don't have the full blown role of mentor for you, and as always don't forget to bring what value you can when you approach someone for mentorship.
