Buying apartments/condos vs single family homes

Hi! We are looking to make our first real estate investment purchase and I was wondering yalls thoughts on purchasing an apartment/condo vs a single family home? In the Austin, TX area the former seems like the more affordable option but researching the complexes themselves it seems like their maintenance is quite lacking and I fear that could become a problem. If a unit above ours has a leak I cant just go into someone elses unit and fix it, Id have to wait on their maintenance people to respond accordingly which could become a problem vs if we did a single family residence we can handle whatever needs to be done asap! Any personal experiences one way or the other? We appreciate any and all advice!
