Can i work for an investor while i work full time?

Question

I had a crazy thought today and i want to see if its possible...I work your typical 9-5 and Im currently saving and doing research in preparation for my first investment. I would like to get a hands on feel and gains some experience in the mean time. Would an investor be interested in allowing a complete newbie to take on some small responsibility? I am very hands on and willing to do manual labor. Maybe look at possible investment properties, clean properties, do...for lack of better terms..."***** work"...anything to get a foot in the door.

I did exactly that.  For nearly 2 years.  It worked out well for me and the investors I worked for.  I worked in my off time. Sometimes when "day job" was slow, I'd double dip at work.  My supervisors didn't mind.

I went to a local BP meetup, met someone in need that matched my abilities.  I basically received 2 years of paid investor school.  Made a decent amount of money on a contract 1099 type situation, proportional to the amount of time I was able to put into the investors' work.

If you have a family, just be very careful not to become a workaholic. That's my good dad/husband PSA.

Of course you can do this as you see from the posts above.

However there are 2 problems with this.  You work full time. Where will you find the time to do the things you said? Lots of people offer help for mentorship. Few of these relationships work out as most do not really follow through. Also the time and effort required on the part of the mentor often make it not worth the trouble.

But don;t let that discourage you. Let it inspire you to work hard and find a relationship that does work.

The next step is to identify someone you want to learn from and "proposition them"

While you can search the bp membership list in your area. It doesnt tell you who's active and not. If "I" were you. I would type your city in the search site and look at posts from different members. Those who you see and feel you would "connect" with, I would pm them and start forming a relationship and see where it goes from there!

It would work for me if you were in Wyoming.  While I am concerned about the market due to energy price drops I usually have a lead or 2 I am not pursuing due to lack of down payment money.  I would be glad to show someone the possible deal and walk them through it.

I don't see that as a crazy thought at all. I have learned a lot of valuable information throughout my life by giving free or cheap labor just to learn. You would be surprised how many people would love to teach you and show you everything they know. I walked onto a local job site where a contractor was building a home and asked if I could help for free to learn some basics. He was all for it.
