Smoke detectors

I recently purchased my first rental property. We bought a quantity of smoke detectors from Sam’s Club, but I am not sure where to place them. I assume one per bedroom, but do I put them in the center of the ceiling? Where do the others go? My city does rental inspections so I want to be sure this is done right. What do you other landlords do?

Thanks in advance for all who answer.
