Trying to learn a market

When your trying to learn a market, what sites do you use to get an idea of what homes are selling for? I've looked on zillow and trulia and I've searched tax records, but I seem to be getting conflicting information. For instance, it will say on trulia that a house sold this past Oct., but tax records show that the last sale was in 1995. What sources do you find to be most reliable?

I have a post in this other thread that collects a bunch of BP links on getting property values:

Scroll down through there a bit to find that post.
