New to America from Australia; Any Tips?

Hi All,

I'm asking this question for someone who lives in Australia and plans to move here to New York within the next year or two. 

Does anyone know what steps someone would need to take in purchasing an investment property as someone just coming over here? 

She's considering house hacking here in NYC (or surrounding) but isn't sure whether she'd qualify and how long it might take to start as a transitioning US Citizen. Any suggestions, recommendations and tips are much appreciated.
