Buying Notes

I've been buying properties to rehab for a while now and I'm hearing a lot about buying notes and how I can get great deals buying notes at a discount.

Can anyone point me to an information source (inexpensive if possible) on the basics of buying notes.

Thanks in advance

Another but similar alternative would be to lend private money in a first lein position at low LTVs on property you wouldn't mind owning. If the note pays off you earn prox 18+% annually; if the note defaults you end up with the property at a large discount.
