Stock Market VS Renting Single Family Detached Home

I'm wondering, why would I rent out a single family home vs putting my money in a stock market index fund? Index funds seem like they're less hassle, but do they consistently perform worse than real estate? If I'm putting in extra work to evict people, you would think there would be some sort of large difference in returns.

They can both be great paths to wealth over time but you are comparing apples to oranges .
