Beginning Real Estate Investor- In Search of Agent, Guidance etc.

I am currently beginning the process of investing in real estate. I have been self educating through books, podcasts, forums and other online resources. I am torn between single family and multifamily as my first investment, and would ideally like to live on-site and start my investments conservatively (acting as property manager) and slowly grow while gaining experience. 

Also, if anyone knows of networking events other than here and the REIA meetups, I would be so grateful!
