Correspondent Banking System Question

Does the worldwide correspondent banking system rely upon NYC?  In other words, (hopefully this would never occur but) if Russia nuked NYC, would both the United States financial system and the worldwide financial system cease to function?  Why or why not?  How about London, NYC, and Chicago?

I am relatively new to studying finance.  Apologies if this is an ignorant question.
