A new member question

While I'm learning how to accurate determine ARV and trying to start wholesaling. A mentor mentioned that I could still be earning some money as a Bull Dogger I believe he called it. In other words I'm coming across properties in my neighborhood and in my travels but I don't feel confident enough make offers or get them under contract but I let someone who is ready to know what I've uncovered. My question is how do I protect myself to get paid the $550 to $1,000 for finding the property when the person purchases the property? How much work should I be doing such as finding out who the owner is and locating them before I offer the property I've found to the Wholesaler or who ever the person is and their level in this real estate maze.
