Buying a Building Registered as Historic??

So I have a potential 5 unit building that is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. I've already spoken to the city zoning department on some issues, but they have no clue what the restrictions may be of its historical classification (if any). Its been used as both commercial and residential before. I would want to convert to all residential.

Anyone have experince with such a case and how the Nat Registry would factor in?

I have a phone call already in to the National Registry. Waiting for a response.

Thanks!
