What do you pay for appraisals in your area

I was just reading a post started by @Ed O. and see that he is paying $1,000 for an appraisal on what sounds like a SFR. This is higher than I've ever been quoted in my area and was curious what others are paying.

In Seattle I'm use to paying $400 for an appraisal that doesn't need any rental comps and $600 on an investment property that needs rental comps.
