Assuming you have all of the right connections, and the money to fund it. How much and how long would it take to get their through multi family properties such as apartment buildings?

I would say that it would very much depend on what percentage of those 10K units you intend to own.

@Ben Ryder Like you said, depends on who you are and your experience level. If you walked away from a a high level position at a RE Private Equity shop or REIT and went out on your own, assuming the market cooperated and kept valuations reasonable, 5-10 yrs seems reasonable. If have no experience or background in investing/fiance/operations and want to start with triplexes and move up to 10,000 units, it would take significantly longer. Primary reason being is that once you reach 5-10 large assets (50 units+) or so you aren't investing in RE, you are investing in your business and your business happens to invest in RE. By then units you have an acquisitions team, an operations team, maybe in house PM shop. A small but very significant difference. Since we are assuming you already have the connections and you don't get the connections without experience, so 5-10 yrs.

That is exactly what I was going to say! If you have enough money (and don't care about ROI) you can get to 10,000 units in 30 days :P
