Discrepancy between building dept and tax dept

Has anyone had an issue where there is a discrepancy between the building dept and tax dept in town? 1 is saying my house is 3 units and then other is saying 2 units. Building department has no documentation to back this statement up except a CO that was issued to us at the closing stating it is 2 units by them. Tax department has record of tax card stating its 3 units. Any input? Were you able to get it resolved without attorneys and a lot of money?

@Megan Brooks if the building department has it as 2 and it’s actually 2, it should be reasonably easy to have the tax documents changed. Especially with a 2-unit CO. They might need to inspect, but that should be easy.

If it’s actually a 3-unit, you’ll have to work on proving that it was inspected, zoned, and approved - or grandfathered from years and years ago.

In a smaller town, you can probably do most of the work on your own. In a city, an attorney or similar would probably be worthwhile.
