Sheriff Sales and liens

Does anyone have any experiences with Sheriff sales? Positive or negative. They have one in my county every other month. I will be attending Decembers just to see how it works. What research do you do ahead of time? My biggest challenge is finding out what liens are outstanding on each property. I had to win an auction and have a lien I was unaware of on the property. Any advice or even experiences shared would be helpful. Thanks
