Liens, lawsuits, and other unwelcome items when buying a property?

If I buy an investment property what else should I look for other than the deal for the long run ? Can I get hit with back taxes, liens, or potential lawsuits of sorts or do they have to disclose that information? What avenues should I go to look these up before I submit an offer? ~Josh
