Brother A pays down mortgage.

Brother B pays as little as possible, takes savings in 2005 and leverages real estate.

In 2011 brother A refi's, pulls out a little cash, buys some cheap properties and gets a 3% 15 yr mortgage and plans to retire early.

Brother B had a credit line on his home and bought stock before the crash. Loses big in the market, loses his rental properties, loses his job and his home. Brother B wants to borrow from Brother to buy cheap property.
