Hello citizens of BP.. Has anyone dealt with Credit Repair companies or anyone that specializes in Credit Repair? I'm trying to improve my credit ASAP to qualify for a loan. I have about 3 credit lines in good standing but still need a higher score. Any thoughts or words of advice..? Thank you citizens!

CR companies are scams. Run your credit report, take it to a competent mortgage lenter and they will tell you what you need to do.

@Victor D. Anything on your report that's accurate generally cannot be permanently removed. Anything that's inaccurate you can challenge yourself with no additional fee to someone else. The fastest way to boost your score is to pay off any credit card balances. Next is to pay off an installment loan. I was traveling a lot for work recently and racked up some good balances. I payed them off the next month and my score went up almost 75 points. Good luck!

@Victor D. Hi Victor. Some of the credit report services also have a simulator that recommends what to do to raise your credit score and/or shows how the score would likely change under different situations. For example, I think myfico.com has this feature. Good luck.

Victor D., Credit repair companies are not necessary, like others have mentioned. Some advice that was given to me, just today actually, is that it's easier and cheaper to to do it yourself by using Google and YouTube to research ways to get your credit score up on your own. Not sure about your exact situation, but there are definitely enough resources out there that will help you more than paying someone would.

@Victor D. I have helped clean up a lot of reports for free. I am going to give 2 pieces of advice. 1. Time is your friend, make your payments on time 2. Keep balances low 3. Original creditors are virtually impossible to remove legally before the 7 year time period from last payment. 4. 3rd party collections will come off every time with the correct steps performed in the proper order. Without any details about your credit report it makes it hard to give anything but general advice

There's a place for going straight to credit repair, option A. There's also a place for "I'm a loan originator, I look at credit reports on a daily basis, do this, this, and that, and I'm guessing it'll jump 75 points in a month. I'm not a credit repair professional, that's just a really good guess" or "oh, yeeeeah you should take 6 months to fix this and maybe look at a credit repair service," option B. A is guaranteed to cost money. B may or may not cost money. We get paid to close loans, if we can give you a few things likely to bump you up in a month, that's waaaay better for us than sending you muck about for six months. Whereas going right to option A is guaranteed to put you in touch with someone that wants to set you up with a new monthly 'credit service' bill and draw it out as long as possible. B is better.
