Current company 401k vs vs Self Directed options

I would appreciate a little advice on this. I just found this site and joined.  Its a wealth of info.  I have read many posts but still find myself confused on the 401k subject for my situation.  I had always considered it a given that my money was stuck in my company 401k subject to the whims of the stock market.

I have had a couple of rental properties in Utah for about 10 years and I just purchased two more ( Total 2-duplex and 2-4plex). I also have a 401k through my job. I don't like the 401k compared to the real estate investments and would like to use the 401k money to make my own real estate purchases.  I can't quite figure out what solution best works for me.   I've been told by the company 401k administrator that I can't do anything (hmmm?).  Im 49 yrs old. I know the rules change at 59 1/2 but what can I do now?

I would like to purchase a property outright with the 401k money and then use the positive cash flow each month to save up for another property and so on and so on.

Any help appreciated.
