Referral and W-9 Form?

I referred a tenant to my old apartment building the last month I was there. I'm suppose to receive a referral check 30-day after. Its' been over two month and now the leasing company is asking for a W-9 after the not telling me they need one.  Is this normal? and should I fill out the W-9?

Yes.  Fill one out, sign it, and give it to them.

They may have to issue you an IRS Form 1099-MISC for the referral payment.

Or more accurately... a 1099-NEC if this is for the 2020 tax year.

Yes, you need to fill out Form W-9. Perhaps there was some mistake in the company, so they did not request it from you immediately. It is a little annoying when employees of companies do something at the wrong time and documents have to be processed in a hurry.
