Adu Vs Dadu

I am looking to build an extra room in my garage that I do not occupy in Charlotte, NC. However, I am not sure as to where to begin. Is there anyone who can recommend what steps to take next? Also, I am interested in having a DADU preferably in my back yard being that I believe the backyard I have is much bigger. I do live in a small HOA Neighborhood.

Evans, I am new to this journey of knowing anything about property management and building an ADU. I want to ask who do I ask exactly if I can build this unit. Am I asking the HOA I pay quarterly and if so what do I ask them exactly? In addition, How would I find a GC as well?
